27th and 28th September 2013 – Camp & Furnace, Liverpool

Liverpool Psych Fest will play host to a unique creative collaboration between iconic musician and sound designer SONIC BOOM (Spacemen 3, Spectrum) and London based design and screen-print collective HERETIC.

The two will come together for the premiere of an Arts Council supported project creating an immersive audiovisual installation, within a bespoke gallery space at Camp and Furnace.  The piece will combine a new audio / sound design piece by Sonic Boom, and a fully immersive visual sphere (combining light and print elements) from Heretic. Liverpool Psych Fest will be the only chance to experience this unique, individual piece of work.

EDITOR NOTES

SONIC BOOM X HERETIC

Since the 1980s, Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember has been working with crucial musicians (Eddie Prévost, My Bloody Valentine, Delia Derbyshire, Stereolab) and applying his touch to records from MGMT to Wooden Shjips, Sun Araw to Panda Bear. He started Spacemen 3, through which he defined space-rock, shoegaze and drone-rock, recording albums that continue to influence an incalculable amount of bands. When Spacemen 3 disbanded, Sonic Boom started Spectrum, a continuation of the more rock-based work he did in Spacemen 3, and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research). His work Hypnogoogia is a masterpiece in hypnotic music performance that he made for the Deitch Gallery (New York).

Heretic is a London based collective who have exhibited in Los Angeles, Istanbul and New York and worked with London International Documentary Festival, Factory Floor and Tim Burgess. For the genre-affirming “Psych For Sore Eyes” EP (Sonic Cathedral, 2012), they created a limited edition, hand screen print, 3D fold out, dual-vinyl visual masterpiece with an associated print and light installation. The release captured a defining moment in the emerging neo-psychedelic scene, featuring key artists Hookworms, White Manna and Lorelle Meets The Obsolete.
This project is supported by Arts Council England. Alison Clark-Jenkins, Director North and Director National, Combined Arts, from Arts Council England said:
«Liverpool Psych Fest is a key part of the growing festival landscape, and we’re pleased to support this project which will bring experimentation and innovation to a new audience, and gives artists the opportunity to work in a new way. The project demonstrates Arts Council England’s support of dynamic and bold contemporary music and we are proud to support it.»

LIVERPOOL PSYCH FEST

The Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia is not an exercise in nostalgia or UFO Club regurgitation, but a celebration of a culture very much at the vanguard of artistic exploration. The 2012 festival was lauded by UK and international media including The Quietus, Shindig!NMEStool Pigeon, Mudkiss, Foundwaves, ProgRock MagArtrockerThe Big Issue In The North and BBC 6Music.

Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia 2013 takes place over two days (27th and 28th September) and three performance spaces set again within Camp & Furnace – a former industrial furnace on the city’s fringe. The event will also feature an expansive programme of visual arts, film and performance art.

«For their initial foray into bringing rock & roll’s more wigged practitioners under one roof, the Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia have scored themselves a 150 microgram hit. Curated with care and performed by bands with a rare joy, this is an event devoid of cynicism and one that embraces the Be Here Now mantra with a real sense of love. Here’s to the next one.» The Quietus
